Dragonfly Materials List

Different tools for different marks

You may already have many of the materials listed, so do use what you have.

Acrylic Paints- A Basic Set, colors you love in a range of dark, medium, light tones.

Titanium White is a Cool White. Titan Buff is a Warm White, which I Love. We’ll use both.

Raw Umber or some brown you like. Plus you might want to buy colors that are hard to mix: turquoise, magenta, cobalt blue, purple/lavender

In THEME 4, we’ll be mixing wonderful colors and seeing warm and cool tones of red, yellow, and blue. We’ll work with the following Warm and Cool Tones: Cadmium Red Light, Alizarin Crimson, Ultramarine Blue, Prussian Blue, Indian Yellow, Lemon Yellow.

Acrylic Medium– mixed with paints to make a glaze, also used as a glue for collage

3 or more different shaped Brushes: some examples are a Small point, a Medium round, and a Large flat. Whatever you can find. Plus some inexpensive hardware store utility flat brushes: 1″, 2″, and 3″ are always useful.

Compressed or willow charcoal (you can also do these projects with graphite, or pencil)

Oil pastels: a basic set ( Mungyo Gallery Soft Oil Pastels is pretty affordable)

Neocolor II Watersoluble color sticks, Caran D’Ache (great color selection in 15 color set), OR Stabilo watercolor sticks. These I highly recommend to begin drawing, mark making, on a painting. They blend in with your colors. You WILL LOVE THEM!

Large Sketchbook of Good Paper: 8″ x 10″ or larger. An 11″x14″ Arteza Mixed Media Sketch Book, 2 pack is great. You can use BOTH sides of each sheet and lay flat in a spiral bound, or tear out along the perforated edge.

Your can also use Marker Paper pads found at grocery stores (they don’t bleed through), or even computer printing paper. An Art Journal Notebook, whichever size you like. Something to keep a record of your Artists Journey, ideas, ‘how you did it’ techniques, dated entries.

Thick Good paper in a few large sheets or Canvas: if you want to work larger and cut them down, such as 22″ x 30″ Strathmore 130′ (lb) Watercolor sheets, Fabriano cold press watercolor paper (textured), Stonehenge large sheets, OR Bristol Board (smooth). Found at Dick Blick.

A few sheets of large inexpensive paper (for experiments, like 11″ x 17″ ledger paper) What I love is Ikea Mala Drawing Paper Roll. It has lasted for years, I can cut off the size I want, and it takes paint!

rag/baby wipes/paper towels: Ceramic dish or paper plates to mix colors as a palette

printer or access to one

TOTALLY OPTIONAL:

fixative spray for charcoal and soft pastel drawings (hair spray also works)

kneaded eraser (can be shaped into a point, also lasts forever)

ready stretched canvas of a size and shape you like (you may want to continue your masterpiece on a good quality hangable surface)

cardboard, drawing board, piece of wood or masonite, to tape paper on when working

painters tape or clips to hold paper on the board

Pack of Colored Construction Paper totally just for fun, great for collage projects.
